Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often about booking and travelling with Escape Surf Travel. Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch and we'll help.
Planning Your Trip
Because we are local surfers who know the waves, the conditions and the destinations. Every itinerary is personally designed around your surfing level, travel style and expectations, so you get an authentic experience of El Salvador rather than a packaged one.
We recommend a minimum of 4 to 7 days — enough to surf several different breaks and still enjoy the rest of El Salvador. That said, we also run day tours and weekend experiences, and if you're after a long-term stay, get in touch and we'll help you organise it.
Absolutely. Many of our guests travel with friends or family who don't surf. We can organise cultural tours, volcano hikes, coffee experiences, fishing trips and plenty more — see Tours and our surf & adventure packages.
Yes. Every one of our experiences can be arranged privately, whether you're travelling solo, as a couple, as a family or as a group.
Booking & Payment
Get in touch through the form on our website, WhatsApp or e-mail with your dates and what you're looking for, and we'll help you design the itinerary before anything is confirmed. Once it's agreed we'll send a confirmation letter that includes all the bank details. Your booking is confirmed once the required amount has been transferred and you've received a confirmation e-mail with your booking details.
To validate your inscription and confirm your booking, either the total amount or an advance payment of the required services must be paid. The remaining balance can be settled before you travel or on arrival, depending on the experience you've chosen. We'll tell you exactly which applies to your trip in your confirmation letter.
Bank transfer — the details come in your confirmation letter — or credit card. We accept most major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard and Amex. Card payments are handled securely by our payment provider; we don't store your full card details.
We reserve the right to make modifications, but only if they don't change the essential services, or if we're forced to by unexpected and uncontrollable situations.
Changes & Cancellations
Booking variations depend on availability and may involve a surcharge, depending on the price of the new dates or inclusions. You'll receive a booking modification once the surcharge is paid. If the weekly price goes up or down, the difference is settled by one party or the other.
A cancellation is valid the day we receive it.
- Cancelled more than two months before the start — we refund 100% of the total paid.
- Cancelled between one and two months before — we keep 25% and refund the rest.
- Cancelled up to two weeks before — we keep 50% and refund the rest, if applicable.
- Cancelled less than two weeks before — no refund. This is exactly why we recommend travel insurance.
No. The excursions and trips we offer are not included in the total camp price. They also depend on a minimum number of participants and on availability, which means they can occasionally be cancelled.
Getting Here & Transfers
Airport transfers are included in the Surf Packages, and private transfers from El Salvador International Airport are available 24/7. Schedule yours around your flight itinerary and send us your flight information as soon as you've bought your airfare.
The included transfer covers the group booking together and arriving at the same time. Guests arriving at different times or on different days pay for an additional airport transfer. The transfer price can also vary depending on the pick-up or drop-off point.
Yes. Every guided surf tour includes private transport between your accommodation and the breaks we choose for the day.
Surfing
No. We've built an option for every level — Learn to Surf for complete beginners, Surf Tours and Combo Surf Trips, and Surf Coaching at intermediate, advanced and longboard levels. See Surfing Experiences for what each one includes.
Every tour is built around the day's swell, wind and tide, and around your surfing level. Depending on those we may surf Punta Roca, El Sunzal, El Zonte, La Paz, Mizata, Punta Mango, Las Flores and other quality breaks around the country. Which ones you surf also depends on the property you book — on a Combo Surf Trip, experienced surfers get both the Wild East and the La Libertad region. See Surf Breaks.
Yes. We offer personalised coaching for intermediate, advanced and longboard surfers, combining in-water guidance, video analysis and performance-focused feedback. See Surfing Experiences. Our sister brand El Salvador Surfing also runs surf lessons and coaching for all levels.
Participants must be at least 18 years old, unless travelling with an adult.
You must be physically fit and able to swim, and confirm that there's nothing medically preventing you from surfing or bodyboarding. Please tell us about any relevant medical matters beforehand — allergies, disabilities, medical incapacities and so on.
There's surf all year. March–May is the most consistent stretch, with clean 6–12 ft waves and surfable conditions all day. June–October brings the year's biggest South Pacific swells, also 6–12 ft. November–December is smaller — clean 4–6 ft waves peeling perfectly over the point breaks. January–February is the least consistent, with 2–5 ft waves and beautiful weather, which makes it the ideal time to learn. Full detail on Surf Seasons — and do get in touch about the dates you're considering, we'll tell you what to expect.
No. Water temperature sits around 82°F for most of the year and only drops to about 78°F in November and December — still warm enough that no wetsuit is needed.
Yes. We keep an ample selection of high-performance shortboards, funboards and longboards. Shortboards are $25 a day or $150 a week; longboards are $30 a day or $180 a week. See Surfboard Rentals. You're also very welcome to bring your own equipment.
Each guest is responsible for our equipment while using it, and accepts responsibility for replacing it if it's lost or seriously damaged through inappropriate use. In that case the equipment is paid for and becomes the guest's property.
Travel Insurance & Safety
Yes. El Salvador has become one of the fastest-growing surf destinations in the world. We work with local surf guides and partners, and we're alongside you throughout the trip to make sure it's a safe and enjoyable one.
Yes — for medical assistance during your stay at any Escape Surf Travel or partner property, every guest should have either a medical card and insurance, or travel insurance. We're a Global Rescue Safe Travel Partner; see Travel Insurance for the options we recommend.
Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you're protected when things don't go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.
The Global Rescue medical membership includes 24/7/365 advisory services with medical professionals, field rescue from the point of illness or injury and medical evacuation to the member's hospital of choice.
No. Global Rescue does not put limitations on activities.
Your Stay
We run four properties along the coast: Casa Las Flores at Playa Las Flores, Punta Mango Surf Resort at Punta Mango, Casa Sunzal at El Sunzal and the AST Surf Hotel at Punta Roca. Each one has its own character and its own wave.
Yes — it's most of what we do. We match the accommodation to your travel style, your budget and the surf you're after. Beyond our own four properties we also work with other trusted boutique hotels across El Salvador, so tell us what you have in mind and we'll suggest the right base.
Yes. Accommodation can be booked on its own, or combined with surf experiences and transport. Get in touch and we'll check availability for your dates.
Every accommodation has air conditioning and a private bathroom. At Casa Sunzal, all rooms also have a jacuzzi.
Yes, within reason. Things beyond what's normally included — extra cleaning, special dietary options, private transport, personalised arrangements — may carry an extra fee, are subject to availability, and need to be confirmed by our team in advance.
Yes. Our properties take private groups, and full buyouts are available — Casa Sunzal, for example, has five rooms and sleeps up to 15. See Host a Retreat.
Images from stays at our properties are only ever used for publicity or promotional purposes — our website, flyers, brochures and social media.
